Whether by twisting bodies into knots in a pseudo-factory setting or testing the physical limits of mundane office furniture, the works in [ ], Rinse, Repeat press on the everyday mechanics of labor. Works, ranging across sculpture, video, photography, and lithography, instead expose it as a mesh of repeated habits and socialized gestures that sustains the illusion of the productive body and naturalizes its material and historical conditions.
A provocative sense of humor saturates the exhibition, and large-scale artworks and installations by artists Mika Rottenberg, Miguel Calderón, Kerry Downey, Joanna Seitz, Bruce Nauman, and Andreas Slominski create architecture at turns excessive and strange. In [ ], Rinse, Repeat, the system of labor turns back on itself—these artworks do not fantasize about an exit but instead show the mundane contortions required to stay inside.
[ ], Rinse, Repeat is curated by Gemima Godfrey, Macaella Gray, Luis Juárez, Elizabeth Smith, and Chloe Zhong.
