Argyro Nicolaou

Argyro Nicolaou is a filmmaker, researcher and writer based in New York. Her work deals with the intergenerational effects of displacement, historical memory and the absurdities of daily life in post-colonial, post-conflict places like her home country of Cyprus. Her short films have screened at festivals in the US and Europe, including at the Museum of the Moving Image, New York; Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival; and Athens Ethnofest, among others. Argyro’s writing has been featured in the American Historical Review, MoMA post, Boston Art Review and numerous collected essay volumes as well as exhibition catalogues. She has participated in and curated film and arts programming at Gallatin Galleries (New York), space52 (Athens), tavros space (Athens), The Island Club (Limassol), and A. G. Leventis Gallery (Nicosia). Argyro holds a PhD in Comparative Literature and Critical Media Practice from Harvard University and has taught film and literature courses at Princeton, Columbia, and Bard College. She is currently working on her first feature fiction film, Excavators, and on the documentary Unsettled (My Sea), which participated in UnionDocs’ 2024 Early Production Lab. She is a member of the European Film Academy, the Visual Artists and Art Theorists Association (phytorio) and is currently one of two Artistic Directors for Cyprus Film Days International Film Festival.
