Bridget Crone is a London-based curator and writer working at the intersection of philosophy, media theory and contemporary performance and moving image practices. She is Lecturer in Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, The University of London. Bridget’s book, The Sensible Stage: Staging and the Moving Image (Picture This / Cornerhouse, 2012) explores concepts of staging, theatricality and the image in relation to contemporary art practice. The book includes an interview with Professor Alain Badiou, and was the outcome of a five-year curatorial research project involving screenings and performances across the UK, including at the Arnolfini, Bristol and the Institute of Contemporary Arts and Whitechapel Gallery, London. A new and expanded edition of the book will be published by Intellect in 2016.
Currently, Bridget’s research focuses on the status of the image in contemporary culture in a twofold manner - exploring the spaces for the projection of images and our interface with images through curatorial projects such as The Cinemas Project (2011-14, and ongoing), which explores the spectral spaces of cinema in regional Australia; and through a growing body of writing and research that seeks to understand the changing technologies of the image, and the convergences of the body and image in relation to political philosophy as well as art practice. Slippages of time and mutabilities of the body are foregrounded in this work.
Bridget’s work has led to speaking engagements at Tate Britain, the Whitechapel Gallery and Photographers Gallery in London, and she has run workshops and symposia such as the highly successful three-day curating moving image symposium at the Arnolfini, Bristol (2014) and for five years, she ran the para-educational film program entitled, The Film Exercise (also at the Arnolfini, 2009-14).
Bridget has held numerous curatorial roles in the UK and Australia including being the Director of Media Art Bath (2006-11) — a publicly funded commissioning organization based in South West England. She was curator-producer at The Showroom, London (2003-6) - one of London’s key public galleries for the production of new work and ideas; and before leaving Australia was project manager at The Melbourne International Biennial. She has also curated projects for the Ian Potter Museum, Melbourne; Gertrude Contemporary Arts Space, Melbourne; Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; Arnolfini, Bristol; Holburne Museum, Bath; Flat Time House, London; 1st Floor, Melbourne among others.
